In April 2022, The Madrid EDITION opened its doors in Old Town, introducing a singular blend of contemporary design to the regal Spanish capital. It's the second EDITION Hotel in Spain, conceived by Ian Schrager with British architect John Pawson and Paris-based designer François Champsau. Together, they've created a knockout urban oasis tailored to the bold, the beautiful, and any traveler who revels in dramatic, color-rich accents to monochromatic design. However, The Madrid EDITION goes beyond good looks, encompassing Latin American gastronomy, multiple bar concepts, and a rooftop pool with cinema-worthy vistas.
The hotel offers 200 guest rooms, including 21 suites and two lavish penthouses. Décor embraces a minimalist aesthetic in white, an updated nod to the mid-90s heyday of The Delano South Beach. Layers of texture break up the palette through plush throws, cushions, and bouclé accent pieces. Striking rococo-inspired headboards serve as the visual centerpiece of every room, drawing the eye towards plush beds. Rooms come equipped with a Nespresso machine, a well-stocked minibar, premium Italian linens, and a Bluetooth speaker. Sleek bathrooms feature rose gold fixtures, backlit mirrors, and fragrant Le Labo toiletries. Higher-category rooms offer terraces and freestanding bathtubs.
A 55-foot-long rooftop pool in a centrally located urban hotel sounds utterly indulgent—until summer temps hit 90+ F and a heat advisory deters sightseeing on sweltering city streets. A row of in-water beds proves popular during summer afternoons when the rooftop resembles a convivial celebration more typical of Barcelona's beach bars.
The hotel's spa, clad in dark wood and antique candelabras evocative of old Spain, offers five rooms, one with a private steam suite. Therapists use Le Labo oil in treatments such as signature massages. A state-of-the-art fitness center with cardio and weights remains open 24 hours a day.
Cuisine and Cocktails as Daring as Design
Though many travelers eschew hotel restaurants in favor of dining in city hotspots, guess would be remiss to overlook dining at The Madrid EDITION, as gastronomy is the property's strength.
The flagship restaurant Jeronimo, Chef Enrique Olvera, renowned for his success with Cosme in New York and Pujol in Mexico City, brings his imaginative culinary approach to Madrid. To arrive at the restaurant, guests pass through a futuristic fuchsia-hued tunnel to emerge into a technicolor wonderland of pinks, reds, and mustard yellows suggestive of Mexico's colorful heritage. Lush greenery in terracotta pots, a trademark touch of The EDITION brand worldwide, punctuates the room with fronds and foliage in shades of emerald.
To get the whole Jeronimo experience, start with drinks at the green marble bar. The order: a piquant smoky mezcal margarita paired with a starter of creamy guacamole studded with serrano peppers and fresh herbs, scooped up with homemade tostadas.
Move to a table for shared plates to sample food that matches the vibrancy of the décor. Octopus tiradito, served over dabs of garlic mash and herb mayonnaise, comes sliced so thin it melts in the mouth in waves of bright olive oil. Chunks of fresh tuna spiked with habanero and avocado, piled high atop toast, highlight the restaurant's access to the city's best seafood. The cochinita pibil, a Yucatán-style barbecued Iberian pork, features a zippy sauce of sweet, earthy flavors infused into the tender meat.
Jeronimo also serves breakfast, offering a blend of Mexican classics like chilaquiles, Spanish dishes, and continental options. While the current setting is entirely indoors, the restaurant plans to expand into an outdoor terrace.
The hotel's alternative restaurant, Oroya, sits on the fourth-floor rooftop in a tranquil greenhouse-like setting framed in blackened steel covered in climbing plants and colorful glass panels. The cuisine, overseen by Peruvian Chef Diego Muñoz, touches on Peru's mixed culinary heritage through a tapas menu and family-style sharing plates. Ceviches and Ha-Kao on Parihuela Broth reflect the influences of Spain, Africa, Italy, China, and Japan on the country's food. Don't miss the Pisco-based cocktails like a Pisco Sour and Capitan.
Just outside, the rooftop terrace features a romantic garden in the sky with a fireplace and a vine-covered pergola. It includes a teak bar, rattan bar stools, and a spacious oak table, ideal for leisurely gatherings just off the pool.
For a nightcap, cocktail service in the Punch Room follows the same style and concept as its London counterpart, offering a shared starter punch served from a large bowl in cozy, club-like surroundings.
Set in a quiet square surrounded by historic buildings, The Madrid EDITION sits close to Puerta de Sol in the heart of the Spanish capital. The property is close to restaurants, bars, and shopping and is within walking distance to three of the most important art museums in Madrid, referred to as The Golden Triangle of Art.
Bold, contemporary rooms, a lively pool scene, and excellent drinking and dining concepts make The Edition Madrid a triple threat in Madrid's competitive hotel market.
