Three Spaniards and two Ukrainians have been arrested, including an Orthodox priest whom the police identified as the alleged leader of a criminal network dedicated to trafficking artefacts from occupied Ukraine.

The recovered pieces are “gold jewels of great historical and economic value” from the Greco-Scythian culture of the 8th to the 4th centuries BC, the police said in a statement. They say the suspects intended to sell the artefacts in Madrid to investors through a network of commercial companies. The haul included a belt, earrings and necklaces.
